LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Charlie Strong's decision to stay at UofL puts him in line to be one of the highest paid coaches in the country. His new contract is expected to be worth around $4 million a year or more. So how can UofL afford it?

Big time college athletics is big business. College athletics data gathered by the U.S. Department of Education revealed UofL's Athletic Department budget is almost twice as much as the Louisville Fire Department's.

In 2011-2012, the University of Louisville spent $84,483,791 on its sports programs, according to Equity in Athletics Data Analysis. That's more than any other school in the ACC and one of the main reasons UofL was invited to join the league.

But the athletics department isn't just spending money, it's making money too. UofL Sports earned $3,356,713 last year and was more profitable than schools like the University of Kentucky and Florida State.

"That's the reason we've been able to build up Cardinal Park, the expansion at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and other projects that we've done," said UofL Associate Athletic Director Kevin Miller.

Now that is what I'm talking about..

Whatever we pay Coach Strong IMO, will never be enough for what he has done for Cardinal football.I stayed up to watch his press conference and the part that rang the most true for me was the part when he talked about some UL players not having a father figure in their lives or watching a father walk out of their lives. That part hit home to me as I was a kid who did not get the chance to know his real father.Coach Strong this past week stuck by a promise he made to Tom Jurich,us the Louisville fans, and players like Teddy and others that passed up offers from other schools to come to Louisville and be part of something special. If we loss Coach Strong,Coach Bedford, and Coach Hurtt UL football would have been knocked back 10 years, we would have been walking into the ACC blind with one hand tied behind our backs. But with Coach Strong we will be successful and we will have a real chance at a national championship, just like "the Pipe" predicted.

What you said rings true,

Having done some volunteer work with disadvantaged kids, and being the grandfather of two boys who after a bitter divorce, no longer have their father in their lives, Coach Strong's contribution is more to our community that winning games. For kids who come from one parent homes anything they do that is extra curricular whether it is sports, band, academic teams, arts or what have you can only affect kids in a positive way because they will busy themselves with something when they are left on their own. Hilary was right when she said it takes a village.

God blessed us with Coach Strong and his wife and family, I wish we had a 100 more just like him.
