Who needs the AP and USA Today Coaches polls when Ken Pomeroy is churning out magic with his KenPom rankings? Yeah, Kentucky is unranked in the two polls that matter on television, but in Pomeroy’s enchanting world of numbers, Kentucky is the 19th ranked team in the country. 19th sounds much better than NR, if you ask me.
Pomeroy uses formulas and statistics that are way above my head to assemble his Pomeroy College Basketball Rankings for all 347 teams. The rankings were updated yesterday and Kentucky is just ahead of Ole Miss in that 19th spot. Florida, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan and Duke make up

RPI is reflective, meaning it reflects the teams historical performance thus far in the season. It only calculates results.
Kenpom is predictive, in that it takes into account many more factors in order to predict the outcomes of games if they were played today...and it is regarded as the most accurate predictor of outcome.
Sagarine gives you a ranking, a predictor, and an Elo Chess (I don't pretend to know this system as I don't pay it much attention).
AP and Coaches poll are just a beauty contest with votes being cast with bias, and presumably using RPI as a jumping off point.
If presented today, the archaic RPI system would no doubt be rejected by the NCAA as tool for Tourney placement.
For instance.......even if UK won out the rest of its season and won the SEC Tourney, it becomes very hard to overcome the statistical damage done in the early season. Kenpom corrects faster and is a more reliable predictor.
Oh yea.....Kenpom has had UofL ranked higher than RPI all season....currently in the 3 spot.
Hope this helps.
And I agree....UK is not performing very well.
